Medical Mission at WME farm Liberia: May 8. 2019

The first ever medical mission was held at the WME Worjoloh McClain Enterprises farm in Borlolah Magibi County just outside of Kakata on Wednesday May 8, 2019. The event was held on a rubber plantation that belonged to my late grandfather Hon Edward B McClain.  Borlorla is a rural area mostly comprising of farm workers and their families with limited or no access to health care. In spite of numerous logistical challenges we braved through and executed the event successfully. Credit for the logistics go to my dear Uncle Dr. Randolph KW McClain and Joe Gweemeniese , farm manager.  This outreach would not have been possible without the efforts of these 2 key People. Patients start started arriving by 6 :30 am. Many travelled 20-30 miles on foot. The plantation manager spread the word to the local population one week before the event. He was able to get us a set up that was both comfortable and functional in spite of the lack of resources. The program started at 9 am and ended at 3.45 pm.

Over 300 men, women and children of all ages gathered at the old bungalow on the farm to access health care services at the medical outreach.  It was not possible to serve them all due to time and personnel constraints. Overall it was a very worthwhile outreach and we plan to do it again soon. Three local registered nurses heard about the event and joined us to serve the patients.  2 of the nurses were from Wolala Clinic in Wolala. A drug store owner from Kakata James referred by David Beyan joined us to help make this event successful. Dr. Randolph McClain was in charge of Patient registration and triage. Yes.. he is a Doctor but sadly not medical (Ph D in chemical engineering )retired and in his early 70’s. Mr James Lackey also non medical helped with medication dispensing under the direction of the medical provider – another very critical function at this event.

It was very emotional amid all the chaos to observe the gratitude that was evident in the patients and families that attended. Many thanks to all people and organizations that contributed to make this outreach possible. The recipients were immensely grateful for the services received.
