Dr. Daramola Honored as a “Woman of the Year”
Assemblywoman Gonzalez shared, “These women are all exemplary leaders and respected innovators in their fields. They are the unsung heroes that keep our community moving forward. It’s important that we take the time to honor, celebrate, and thank them.”
This year’s Women of the Year Awardees included: Genoveva Aguilar, Workers’ Rights, Logan Heights Paloma Aguirre – Environmental Protection, Tijuana River Valley Christine Basiliere, RN – Health Education, Chula Vista Brigette Browning – Organized Labor, San Diego Dr. Iyabo Daramola – Health Services, Paradise Hills Susan De Los Santos – Media, National City Erin Kelly – Arts, South County Zara Marselian – Social Services, National City & City Heights Christine Moore – Business, Chula Vista Dr. Melinda Nish – Higher Education, Chula Vista Principal Mary Rose Peralta – Education, Chula Vista Captain Anastasia Smith – Public Safety, Otay Mesa Chaplain Olivia Jean Solomon – Military, Barrio Logan The event featured a beautiful reception, a video tribute, which showed the Women of the Year in action, and special performances by talented local youth, Katriz Trinidad, San Diego Youth Symphony & Conservatory’s Opus String Quartet, and the Sweetwater Union High School District’s Women ASB Presidents, who dedicated a special rendition of Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman” to the Women of the Year Awardees.
Assemblywoman Gonzalez introduced Dr. Daramola this way: “A graduate of the University of Ife in Nigeria, this honoree completed her medical residency in Detroit and Hawaii before coming to San Diego. Focusing on preventative healthcare to maintain optimal health and wellness in our neighborhoods, she envisioned a place where patients are treated less like a number and more like family member. In 2000, she established Caring Hearts Medical Foundation and Free Clinic in Paradise Hills and has since served countless members of our community as well as those in need overseas. Our Woman of the Year in Health Services is Dr. Iyabo Daramola!”
